Extreme Family Portrait – Gail’s Maternity

Ottawa Extreme Family Portrait - Justin Van Leeuwen

Today’s a good day, lots of new folks are coming to this site via Julie Cole’s blog post on YummyMummyClub and if you’re looking for *my* look at Julie’s family – I wrote about it here.

It’s funny how some things lead to others. I was recommended to Julie by-way of a friend of hers who I had photographed here in Ottawa. Similarly, Gail & Andrew (pictured) – who are now very eagerly anticipating their first child – I first met two years ago on the first Scott Kelby photowalk I lead in Ottawa. You can see them at camera left in this post. Who knew that it would lead to a maternity shoot now?

Normally I turn down maternity gigs, in fact I probably did just this with Gail when she contacted me. As a photographer, or any professional, I think it’s important to acknowledge your strengths and focus your energies on what you’re good at; this allows you to specialize. I had a few go’s at maternity with my own wife and, well, the results were interesting at least. But Gail insisted she did want me, she knows my work, and she didn’t want the soft belly with hands over the navel in a heart shape, or silken sheets flowing from her breasts as she stood silhouetted against a bright window. No – she wanted to go nuts – she wanted something different, unique and fun. Now that *is* my style, and I think it paid off.

We shot this near sun-set at a hospital stand-in I’m quite fond of, I then found stock photos of an emergency entrance to composite into the shot (I can’t believe, that I worked at a hospital for 3 years and have no photos to use… granted, the Emerg was under construction that entire time). Props to Lee Mousseau for giving up his Saturday afternoon/evening for the shoot and being a great light-stick holder and stand in.

That's some fun right there. :-) A photographer friend of ours did our "heart shaped hands" type of shoot for us, and while it was great, it was also their first maternity shoot and they didn't really have the experience and confidence to break the cliches. Give me a shoot like this any day. ;-)
