It’s been a while since I did any Rorschach type image, but this one seemed to work well with it. Not for everyone, considering it’s obviously manipulated (I didn’t hold a mirror up to get the shot).
You can see the original here.

We had ourselves another Photojam this past weekend. More folks showed up and lots of more fun was had [read: more booze consumed].
Same location, alley beside my house, it’s easier to keep an eye on the kids when they’re running around you. It’s a great way to shoot, experiment, drink, hang out with friends (new and old), without the burden of ditching your brood with your significant other for an evening while you live it up.
Of course we take fewer and fewer photos as the day goes on, but I think some quality stuff comes out of it – if not ideas. There’s learning involved in the best way I know how to teach: by doing.
This learning applies to me too, since I get to experiment with some portraiture techniques I wouldn’t normally feel confident pulling with a paying client, especially when I have to work fast.
The end result is a few ideas, implemented, that I can take with me the next time I have to shoot a client. So an afternoon and evening of wine & beer and photography will, ultimately, better serve my customters. That’s win:win kids.
You can see this photo a bit bigger over at flickr & check out our small, but mighty, group there too.
Have a great labour day weekend! Hope y’all haven’t over-packed it and take some time to really enjoy yourself and your loved ones.
You can grab this bigger over on my flickr page if you want to use it as a wallpaper or something.
And we’re back!
Spent the past week on a brief repose in Toronto. Most of the time was with my family, and extended family for those who *ahem* managed to get back to me (props to Dan & Andrew Lieu for grabbin beers with me!)
I travelled light for this trip. 2 kids under 3 demands it. I brought my G11, a couple flashes, a couple PW’s (in case I had an opportunity to take photos – next time Jonathan – the Lumiquest Softbox 3, and the FlashZebra extended hot-shoe cord. Can’t say enough good things about this setup (or potential setup) that this compact group of lights & mods can bring. Of course most of it ended up being handheld of my kids… but had the opportunity presented itself I would have been prepared, all while carrying, techincally, less weight than my 1D & a 24-70mm lens.
Oh, and the shot here doesn’t have anything to do with that stuff, except the G11… Took it on my way home. Anyone want to guess/know what it is? The title basically gives it away – sound off in the comments please!
When Mel and I first moved into the Hintonburg area in Ottawa, we only had a few restaurants that we knew about beforehand. With a preemie in the hospital, we were really always looking for comfort food – the familiar. That said, there wasn’t much variance in what we ate, and one of the places was getting kind of expensive.
After bringing Quinn home we went for a stroll with the intent of travelling a bit further from our immediate neighbourhood in search of eats. Hino is literally a few blocks from our house, but the fascade is dark enough that I wasn’t even sure it was a reastaurant (despite the sign… don’t tease me). As we walked by the waiter saw us peeking and insisted we come in. He was friendly enough that we obliged and, after a great meal, we were thoroughly impressed with the quality of the food and the unassuming nature of the place. Was it “pretty?” No – but it was close, good, and not very busy…
A few years later and we end up eating there once a week. Terry (Hino San), the sole owner for 25 years is not only a gracious host, but a friend. He makes our meal and comes to hold one of our kids so that we can actually enjoy our meal. I don’t get this kind of service at Casey’s.
I think the place get’s a bad rep because some people come with expectations; it’s Japanese so it has to be Sushi right? No – it’s a grill, or the Japanese equivalent of a diner. Can Terry make Sushi? Yup – and he does on occasion, if he has the cut.
All said I really like the place, I recommend it to friends, but not too many, while I want Hino’s to do well, and stick around, I also enjoy the fact that it, and he, are never too busy for our family to come as we are.
