It’s very rare that sitting at home, wishing you had more editorial photography assignments and portrait work, pays off. But that’s pretty much exactly what happened when the folks at Grocery Business Magazine contacted me to to photograph local entrepreneurs, co-owners of Kardish Health Food Centres, and brothers Carey and Robert Assaf. The creative agency, Boomerang Art + Design, was hoping to get something a bit more fun and energetic than the typical “people-standing-with-crossed-arms” cover photo.
We worked with a few different treatments. My first impression of the store was how uniform, clean, and well stocked it was. I wanted to convey the depth of product so commandeered a ladder to get above the racks and shot down onto the brothers with a medium telephoto lens. The more dynamic setup was a simple blue paper backdrop, some hard light, and kale chips.
It was nice to get out and “play” a bit with our portraits on location. And I’m thankful to the creative for giving us the opportunity to stretch the look a bit beyond the norm. You can check out the whole magazine online here.
