Portraits and Headshots have long been one of my favourite parts of photography. I enjoy the challenges of taking photos of people on-location and trying to work through someone’s own potential inhibitions in having their photo taken. I try create a portrait that represents them as a person, but also is useful to them in a professional capacity.
Strictly speaking, this may extend beyond *just* a headshot. While a bit more of a production, getting a full-body or wider shot can provide a bit more context to the image or just allow for other design elements when integrating it into print or website layout.
I’ve also found a pleasant shift over the past year or so, where individuals are more receptive to having a portrait taken in an environment other than a studio. Of course there’s a lot of value and versatility to a headshot taken against a pure white background.

It’s also important to play and experiment. Take portraits for just me. Sometimes these will be of greater use to the subject, sometimes it’s a cool idea that they hadn’t considered. Sometimes it’s of my kids, because who better to photograph than those closest to you?
