You never know when you’re going to get your next great client. Emma Doucet’s youngest daughter and my youngest son both go to the same daycare. Normally you spend your time making trivial kid-based chit-chat about poop and food and growing out of clothes, but after a year your’e sure to learn something interesting about someone. As it turns out, Emma’s been running her own interior design company Grassroots Design for the past few years and I happen to be an interiors photographer!
Emma’s design is based on practical and usable environments, instead of drastically re-shaping her clients spaces with un-necessarily costly renovations, she focuses on using much of the environment as it is. Grassroots incorporates the classical elements found in so many of Ottawa’s older homes, like old fixtures, tile or wallpapering to match the “feel” of the space, and augments it with value-driven modern products to create a lovely balance of beauty, space that makes sense, and affordability for her clients. As I learned from my own renovations; it’s the materials that often cost the most in a renovation.
