Ottawa Residential Interior Photography – Minto’s “Poplar” in Mahogany

Photographing a model home was a first for my interior photography career. While many residential spaces we photograph are still staged, they still have some elements of an existing human presence, something to make it “lived in”. At Minto’s latest development, Mahogany, we worked with their largest offering named “Poplar“. With little to no cleaning up of peoples belongings, I was able to focus on photographing the space for Our Homes Magazine.

Everything in the home was carefully styled by Kiss Design Group giving the space a neutral feeling of lived-in comfort, but not overwhelming the tastes of any potential buyers. I had to shoot a lot for this editorial. We don’t always know exactly how the piece is going to be laid out so both vertical and horizontal images are taken, and I can never resist a good panoramic image if the setting is right. Below are some of my favourites from the shoot.

Shooting in the middle of one of the coldest winters on record, we also had to make sure not to include much of the frozen outside. I intentionally “blew out” a lot of the windows to make sure the leaf-less trees and snowbanks didn’t show up. In my final edits, I also added a subtle and soft warmish glow to the light.

A part of the home that didn’t make it to print was the basement. It was complete with pool table, personal home theatre, bar, and wine cellar by Capital Cellars, who also worked on one of my favourite wine closets of all time.
