I received some exciting editorial photography assignments from Ottawa Magazine this past spring. First, I was privileged enough to work with the lovely and talented Sarah Mercer. Suffering from chronic health conditions, the feature story by Roger Collier covers Sarah’s transition from the “All-in-one” healthcare environment of the Children’s Hospital, to the fragmented and cold world of adult healthcare. All while living on her own. Impressive, considering I have a hard enough time booking my own dentist appointments. The above image was our first of two setups, honestly, the space we had to work in at Algonquin College wasn’t the most inspiring, so we took one with a plain background, and another with the classroom setting intact. The later is what went to print as you can see below.

Ottawa Portrait Photographer – Diane & Jen
I have this running joke with friends that Real Estate agents consistently have some of the cheesiest portraits. They’re almost always in their suits, in a very typical and traditional studio pose; maybe leaning forward, maybe seated with their hands in their lap, a male agent standing tall with a wide friendly grin. I get it. They need to seem professional and approachable in an image that they will use in countless flyers, banner ads, business cards, sidewalk signs and more. Maybe I have a heightened, if not critical, sense of this as a portrait photographer. But, to me, I’ve just found them ubiquitous and boring; they all blend together in their sameness. Except for one pair of Ottawa Real Estate Agents: Diane & Jen.
Ottawa Commercial Photographer – Parallel 45
April was a whirlwind month of mixed interior, commercial, portrait, and editorial photography, with almost daily shoots and tight deadlines. One of my long-time favourite interior design clients, Turnbull Design Consultants, recently had a complete brand makeover with Ottawa-based creative firm Cinnamon Toast. Parallel 45 is the same great team, with a fresh new brand identity to reflect the current partnership. I had worked closely with Liz, Robin, and Sarah before, but never with them as the subjects.
Ottawa Interior Photographer – for Grassroots Design and Build
Since starting interior photography for Grassroots Design & Build I’ve been documenting their projects almost weekly. Not every renovation is a full home, in some cases it was just a single bathroom, or a kitchen. The above image is from an older home in the Fisher Park neighbourhood of Ottawa. It was a dark and moody room, with a lovely antique ceiling fixture (something I’m finding is a signature with Emma’s work). I was fortunate that this particular spot had a small closet I was able to back into in order to compose the image. Other angles just didn’t properly convey the room as I saw it (there is a window to camera-right that accounts for the “blueish” daylight splash on the tub. I will remark that the very first hurdle I had to overcome was figuring out how to turn off the toilet – it was motion activated and opened the lid every time I walked past!
Ottawa Editorial Interior Photographer – Ion Aimers New Edinburgh Home
The spring issue of Our Homes Magazine Ottawa is out, and with it a whole new slew of stylish and custom renovated homes and interior photography. I was surprised when I found out I’d be photographing local restaurateur Ion Aimers’ new (old) home in New Edinburgh – around the corner from his latest food venture ZaZaZa’s – that it maintained a humble country-home style. Not to say everyone that’s sold a successful business should be so ostentatious as to brag about it, I was just pleased to find his home was as comfortable as any I’d like to live in.
