Ottawa Portrait Photographer – Chef Patrick Garland of Absinthe Cafe

Chef Patrick Garland by Ottawa Portrait Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen

A portrait photographer often has to push people and seek out the best shot of an individual, sometimes they’re hard to coax in front of the camera and unwilling to do anything that would lend themselves to a good portrait. Sometimes they offer to light their hat on fire.

Chef Patrick Garland of Absinthe Cafe in Ottawa is clearly the later. This year he’ll be competing in Gold Medal Plates – a charity driven cooking competition – and they needed a headshot for their posters and other campaign material. Problem: like most people Chef doesn’t like having his picture taken.

Ottawa Corporate Photography – Desjardins Financial

Ottawa Corporate Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen - Desjardins Financial

It’s been a while since my last blog post, and while this may not be the most exciting of projects, it’s the type of corporate photography I do that helps pay the bills. It’s high-volume, multi use, kinda stuff and it’s important for a company, and their brand, to showcase their talent and not just be another faceless company using standard iStock images available to the world. It’s custom stock; just for them, their team, and the people you’ll really meet and talk to when sitting down with a financial planner from Desjardins Financial Ottawa.

Editorial Photography – Daytrips for Ottawa Magazine

Patisserie La Toque by Ottawa Editorial Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen
Last year I was contracted by Ottawa Magazine to take some lifestyle-esque editorial photography of four towns within a days drive of Ottawa; perfect for a daytrip! Travelling to these spots was going to be an interesting challenge for me, since I hadn’t been to many of them before. The assignment, should I chose to accept it, was to photograph stores, food, people and places; to distill a bit of the charm, people, and product available so close to Ottawa. Overall, I didn’t know what to expect, but counted on my own Toronto-born charm to get me some access into these small towners lives.

Sadly, most of the images never made it to print, in fact, it took a whole year before they went to print at all. So below are some that made it, and a few of my favourites that didn’t make the cut. It’s a long post, but I promise, there are more photos than words.

Editorial Photography – Taj Dhinsa for Pharmacy Practice +

Editorial Photography by Justin Van Leeuwen for Pharmacy Practice Plus

I was excited to get a call from Rogers Media to photograph the cover story for the relaunch of their publication “Pharmacy Practice +.” They needed some slick editorial photography to reflect a fresh new direction for the brand, as well as their bright young pharmacist cover “model” Taj. Despite being located in small-town Hawksbury, Ontario, Taj runs one of the busiest Wal Mart Pharmacies in the country. This was a blessing and a curse, as this meant we’d be working at a very busy store with customers (who we’d have to avoid photographing), but a very large retail store, that just happened to have clear space where we could set up our own portable studio.

Residential Interior Photography – Bathrooms & Kitchen by Grassroots Design

Ottawa Interior Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen

One benefit of working on multiple interior photography projects with the same designer is that you really get a sense of their design, and certain signature elements start to stand out among their body of work. Clawfoot tubs, unique light fixtures, a great sense of colour splashed against neutral colours. Tone, shape, style, they all come together and leave a signature that is distinctly that of the designer and builder. Emma at Grassroots Design & Build definitely has one that I appreciate photographing, and it makes sitting in someone elses’ bathroom a pretty pleasurable experience while you work.
