A few weeks ago I got a call from my good friends at MediaStyle to come photograph in their newly opened “IdeaSpace”; a creative hub that is available for special events and as a location studio if necessary. Since I don’t have a studio of my own, the ability to have a big and beautiful space to work with my clients who, otherwise, may not have appropriately situated backdrops is a huge benefit and great value as a portrait photographer. The client, in this case, is Trevor Ryan, a personal fitness coach and model. He was coming off competition and wanted some new images that took some of the focus away from him as a hunky beefcake and more to “incredibly good looking rugged male,” which wasn’t a huge stretch.

Ottawa Editorial Interior Photographer – Our Homes Ottawa Winter 2014
The latest issue of Our Homes Ottawa is out and again I get to snag the cover with a great custom renovation designed by Shiva Gupta of 7j Design. The great thing working as the interior photographer for this home is that it is a bungalow and everything was all laid out in front of me in basically one big room. The Kitchen (as you can see above) was spacious and opened into the dining room, which in turn opened into the living room. All were grounded by a real wood burning fireplace that made the cover of this issue to help keep everyone warm during the season.
Ottawa Commercial Photographer – essence catering
As a commercial photographer, I try to create images that help my clients better sell their product. While so many of my commercial jobs are people, portraits and interiors, there has been a product photography component to my business. It’s not something I do often, and I’m not always even completely comfortable with the results. In many cases, the needs of my clients are, fundamentally pretty basic: take a photograph of product x on a white background. There’s a lot that goes into pulling this off cleanly, and even more work to keep things clean and touched-up in post, but beyond that the images aren’t particularly creative, so I rarely show them unless they’re really special.
Ottawa Portrait Photographer – Ottawa Nights
I had the absolute fortune to work with the lovely Toosje Delaney on a fantastic evening on the Ottawa River. I was writing a review for the Canon 200-400 f/4 L IS 1.4 (in laymen terms: really big expensive lens), and wanted to take the unique opportunity to get outside and really work some portraits. In all honesty, taking a $13,000 lens out for some portraits is a bit of overkill – it’s probably best used as a sports and wildlife lens – it, and Toosje, certainly did not disappoint.
I’ve had a few people comment on the effect in the bokeh of the above photo. You can see leaf patterns clearly in the circles of light that are in the background. Those are created from the actual leaves I was shooting through when taking this image. You see, when you’re shooting at 200-400mm on a cliff, you can’t really ask your subject to back up much, so it’s up to you to go further… in my case right into the bushes. Anything to get the shot!
At the same time as the lens review, I was working with some remote light triggers. Pocket Wizard Plus III’s have range of up to 1600ft which, thanks to some of my friends, we were able to put to the test. I have a post on this shoot over on the Pocket Wizard blog. You can also check out my review of the Plus III’s little sister the “Plus X.” All told, if you want to work with off-camera lighting you will need these, or triggers like them at some point. In my case, I think I have 4 different types of ways to remotely trigger my lights… gotta have backups!
Ottawa Interiors Photographer: GOHBA Housing Design Awards 2013
I had the honour this year of serving as the official photograph event sponsor of the 2013 Greater Ottawa Home Builders Association Housing Design Awards (GOHBA Awards, or… GOHBA…A?). What does an official sponsor do? Well, he works his butt off as an event photographer for the night, taking photos of the best builders, architects, and home designers in Ottawa. I also have the benefit of having worked as the interiors photographer for Roy at RND construction for the past few years. Last year, RND won “Renovator of the year” with projects including this hollowed out suburban home and this custom-built home project.
