JVLphotography – 2014 recap

Ottawa Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen
It’s en-vogue to do a retrospective of one’s favourite photographs from the year. What sort of bugs me about this is it’s usually photographers selecting their own work, and why not? We got through it, took some good photos, probably more than a few bad ones, and maybe we need a bit of a pat on the back. Truth be told, while I’m happy with a lot of the work I produced this year, I find myself compelled to share the work of others whose photography I truly admire. People like Cole Burston, an Ottawa-based photojournalist, have produced a beautiful array of images from this city that seem to perfectly sum up the collective experience of our community. The duo of Amanda Large & Younes Bounhar of DoubleSpace Photography have absolutely blown me away with their world-class architectural imagery. Luke Copping, in Buffalo, has become one of my new favourite editorial and portrait photographers; I study his work trying to pull out his lighting secrets.

I could pull out my own favourite images, but that’s what my portfolio is for. Instead, I’d like to take the time to thank the people who helped me pull this past year off; my third year in business, and my best yet. The assistants, the council, the second shooters, the models and, all of them, the friends that help me make the photographs and do the work that I love.

Commercial Interior Photography – Mint Hair Studio

Commercial Interior Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen - Mint Hair Studio

How fortuitous that my favourite hair stylist (yes, I get a “fancy” haircut) and one of my favourite interior photography clients came together to design the new Mint Hair Studio. While Grassroots Design hasn’t done a great deal of commercial interiors, I instantly fell in love with this transformed space.

Editorial Photography for WLU Alumni Magazine – Carolyn Wilkins, Bank of Canada

Editorial Photography by Justin Van Leeuwen for WLU Laurier Campus Magazine - Carolyn Wilkins

It’s a great feeling when your editorial photography is strong enough for a university magazine to call you, without any prior relationship, to photograph their cover story. Gleefully accepting this important assignment to photograph Wilfred Laurier University Alumni Carolyn Wilkins, the first female Senior Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada, I wasted no time in contacting the BOC to tour their current offices on Laurier Street (coincidence?), downtown Ottawa. Meeting with their media team, I knew in advance that I’d have an hour to setup and maybe an hour with Carolyn on shoot day. I took scouting photos so that I could build a shot list and precisely plan what gear I’d bring, and the order we’d need to set up.

Extreme Family Photography – the Burlington or Bust tour

Ottawa Extreme Family Photographer Justin Van Leeuwen's Unique take on the family portrait

This past July my trusty Alex and I took a road-trip past Toronto to Burlington, Hamilton, and Mississauga to photograph some amazing Extreme Families. This has become a sort of annual tradition for me, but I’ve certainly never photographed so many families in such a short amount of time. Usually, I’ve gone to photograph one family and then packed up and headed back home to Ottawa. This ambitious trip saw us photograph 6 families in 3 days, plus one portrait client because why not. Below you’ll see all the family photos, as well as some behind-the-scenes photos or, as I like to call them “Alex holding things.”

Interior Photography – More work from Grassroots Design & Build

Ottawa Interior Photography - Justin Van Leeuwen

Not all interior photography is a full-on award winning home, quite often it’s a small but important renovation. I know incremental renovations are all I can afford, and a simple update to a bathroom, kitchen, or another important room of your home could be all you need to fall-in love with your space all over again.
