Incandescent

Incandescent
Call me old-fashioned, but I still like the warm glow good ol’ energy-wastin’ bulbs produce. Sure, I have LED’s – SOMEWHERE – but we ain’t using ’em. Nope. I also like to leave the lights on in rooms that I’m not in, as well as using the Refrigerator to cool the house down in the summer. We’re an atomic family and we’ve got energy to BURN.

Speaking of burning, yes we let Quinn play with these lights – I’m also giving him a box of matches for Christmas.

This is a test shot I did for a band shoot a few months back – it’s Eddie, one of my new friends from here in Ottawa. He was interested in the “process” (so was I since I hadn’t done it before.. SHHHH) so he volunteered to come along as my grip or assistant, or 430ex on slave with a lumiquest softbox III voice operated mobile stand. Eddie, however, is not in the band.

This spot of light caught my eye because it just “appeared” on a staircase, during sunset, and I was facing West. Turns out the apartments across the street at that time of day, during that part of the year, just happened to catch the light and pointed it’s golden warmth downwards so I could find it.

I forgot about the shots I took then until today as I archive dive – inhibited by sleety snow (I’m not afraid to bring the camera out in the snow – but it better STAY as snow). I’m tired enough that my eyes are actually failing a bit on me – so let me know what you think about this shot and the way it’s presented.

I’m not the biggest Christmas fan, I get a bit moody and maybe I’m just too cynical for all the happy-go-lucky’s bouncing around this time of year. I like getting gifts for people, and I certainly like receiving – but it’s all the FUSS that bugs me.

Mel’s quite the opposite, however, and imagine my surprise that, while we were out walking in Montreal last month, there was a late-night X-mas Shoppe in old-town just waiting for her. It was a bit overwhelming (for her – I was obviously UNDER-whelmed) with shiny things and little houses with lights in them and crap made out of foam with google eyes on it or whatever…

So this week I get to carry home a sticky tree, put it somewhere for 1 month only and just kinda be expected to be happy – and I hate being expected to do things – it makes me do the opposite.
