Kettleman’s Bagels is an Ottawa institution. Not only is it the only 24-7-365 eatery in town, their bagels are, arguably, the best in the world. Over the past few years, Kettleman’s has gone through a massive makeover. Renovating their iconic Bank street storefront and overhauling their website. I was fortunate enough to be brought in to provide commercial photography for all aspects of the business. Commercial Interior photography, custom stock, portraits, and even food.
I’m not sure if the space will ever be finished. Doing a massive renovation all while staying open meant that refitting areas had to happen incrementally. On one visit massive external garage-like windows were being installed. On another their new menu signs had been replaced. All with lineups out the door and bustling activity no matter the time of day. I did want to make sure to show off the details of the new space, so timed my visits carefully avoiding peak visiting hours.
Custom image stock has become an important component of a business’ branding and social media presence. Not only do they require background images for websites and printed material, but a slew of facebook, instagram, and other shares require imagery unique to my client. A stock photo purchase from Getty or iStock that absolutely anyone can use just isn’t going to cut it. Some of these images are set-up and lit, specifically trying to achieve a particular look. Other’s are more free-flowing and following a documentary style taken over a number of hours or days.
While I love to eat I wouldn’t consider myself a food photographer. Thankfully, Kettleman’s required a more matter-of-fact approach to their food to clearly illustrate their offerings on the website.
